Athletes must adhere to the eligibility requirements established by the Virginia High School League. Additionally, Wakefield requires student-athletes to maintain a 2.0 GPA (eligibility policy approved by the Arlington School Board). Students from Other Schools
Students from HB Woodlawn and 8th graders from middle schools in the district for Wakefield High School can participate in the crew team.
Swim Test (Novices Only)
All new rowers must pass a Swim Test prior to practicing on the water. The Swim Test will be administered for all new crew team members prior to the start of on-the-water training.
Winter conditioning occurs at the school M-F 3:15- 5:45 beginning the week before Thanksgiving and continuing until try out week. Try out week is typically early-mid February. Students must have their physical forms turned in to participate.
Season (2020) starts Feb 18th– practice is 6 days a week (@4 pm- 7 pm M-F with study hall prior) and 8 – Noon Sat. Practices will be held at the Anacostia Community Boathouse http://www.anacostiaboathouse.org/ unless otherwise noted by emails from the coach.
Practices are mandatory once season starts. You must email your coach if you are going to miss a practice. Unexcused absence means the rower will not row in the regatta that weekend. During Spring Break there are two-a-day practices in morning and afternoon and are required.
Transportation for Practice
The team is bused from school to practice and back to school.
NOTE: During the week, your child will miss the late bus home from Wakefield. Make plans now as to how your child will get home!
Dressing for Practice
Prepare for cold weather or rain or heat/sun, layers (Underarmor, long pants, no loose pants), must have sneakers every day, extra socks are important. Team will do cross training if they can’t get on the water.
